Imagery Techniques
Could you tell me the basic categories of imagery techniques you utilize?
I distinguish three broad classes of techniques and strategies.
1) Symptomatic techniques: designed to modify or manipulate a symptom in
some way. Some examples are: symptom suppression, symptom substitution, time
distortion, glove anesthesia.
2) Etiologic techniques: What is the meaning of the symptom...what do we
find out through the dialogue? What do we learn by "Listening to the symptom,
listening to the pain?" (See Atlantis 4/92, Rossman:
Listening to Your Symptom).
3) Transformational techniques: These are the existential and metaphysical
techniques to explore the essential self.
